Job Summary by the Career Balance Team:

The Integrated Services Programme (ISP) Restart Centre is hiring a Teaching Assistant for their independent learning to learn Centre in Whitstable. The Centre supports young people transitioning back to school after a long absence or to a new school following a change in placement. The Teaching Assistant will mentor and support one pupil or a small group, assist the classroom teacher, report on progress, and supervise pupils during non-classroom time. The ideal candidate will have a strong education background, experience in a similar role, and the willingness to undergo a background check. The Centre is committed to professional development and offers a friendly and inclusive team environment.

Basic Salary: £19,000

Hours: 35 hours

About our School

Polar Re-Start Centre is an independent learning to learn Centre supporting young people to transition back to school following a long absence or to assist with the transition to a new school following a change in placement .

Our Centre is able to support young people returning to mainstream education as well as those with Social emotional and mental health needs and /or Autistic Spectrum Condition.

We provide a high quality learning to learn programme Providing Opportunities to Learn , Achieve and Re-engage or Re-Start the young person on their educational journey.

Role responsibilities

  • Dedicated to mentoring and supporting one pupil or else a small group of no more than five pupils
  • Supporting the Classroom Teacher during lessons
  • Reporting on pupils’ progress and concerns, and liaising with other School staff to ensure pupils needs are met
  • Supervision of pupils during non-classroom time including extra-curricular activities and school trips
  • Assisting with lesson planning and classroom preparation
  • Setting work where appropriate, and marking
  • Building positive relationships with your pupil/s and driving interaction and positive learning outcomes


  • Have a strong basic education, ideally to A-level, with a minimum of GCSE Grade C or equivalent in English Language and Mathematics, and sound IT skills.
  • Previous experience in a similar role ie, Teaching Assistant
  • Some previous experience of working with pupils with SEMH within an Educational setting
  • Be experienced and confident enough to be able to lead on a specialism ie, Reading, Mathematics, Forest School etc
  • Experience of behaviour management and techniques
  • Committed to professional development and willing to learn
  • Must be willing to undergo an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check prior to commencing work. Any costs incurred will be met by ISP.

The successful candidate will be required to complete an enhanced DBS Check, cost of which will be met by ISP Restart Centre.
