Job Summary by the Career Balance Team:

Thames Water is looking to hire a Senior Quantity Surveyor to work on Capital Delivery projects. The role will involve completing a study, developing the procurement strategy, and procuring and awarding the main contract. The Senior Quantity Surveyor will provide commercial management and assurance, ensuring value for money for the projects. Responsibilities include cost forecasting/reporting, estimating, procurement support, contract management, commercial assurance, governance, dispute advice, and guidance. The ideal candidate should have a degree in Quantity Surveying, in-depth knowledge of infrastructure and the water industry, excellent commercial and contractual knowledge, and strong negotiation and dispute-resolution skills. The salary ranges from £52,000 to £70,000 per annum.

Job Description:The Senior Quantity Surveyor will work on Capital Delivery projects that will typically require 12-18 months to complete all activities up to the award of the main contract, with the design and build contract subsequently being delivered over several years.

During the pre-contract period, we will need to complete a study, consider the options and feasibility of the solution, develop the procurement strategy, reference the solution, and procure and award the main contract.

In this vital role, you will provide commercial management and assurance, ensuring value for money for your projects whilst working with the Project Manager and the rest of the team on all commercial aspects, pre and/or post-contract.

What you’ll be doing as a Senior Quantity Surveyor

  • Monthly Cost Forecasting/Reporting: Ensure cost management against the budget, highlighting commercial issues early, including managing and reporting on contingency/risk.
  • Estimating: Manage the cost estimating process using our Estimating Team; understand Business Plan budgets, validate the project’s estimated cost, and check its affordability against the Business Plan. Providing insight and advice into estimates.
  • Procurement Support: Obtain and review quotes for works and services. Ensure suppliers and contractors are engaged under the most appropriate Terms & Conditions. Provide commercial support during the procurement of the main contract, including undertaking commercial evaluation, benchmarking, and negotiation of tenders.
  • Contract Management: Contract administration includes change management, producing correspondence, monitoring/recording change, risk management, performance management, and communicating contractual lessons learned.
  • Commercial Assurance: Ensure value for money, review monthly payment applications and invoices, and ensure that payments are made on time and by the Contract; identify cost audit requirements and agree on Final Accounts.
  • Governance: Ensure we always maintain financial governance; provide expert input to economic and contract governance proposals.
  • Dispute Advice: Resolving claims as required, providing commercial advice and guidance.
  • Guidance: As the Senior member of the commercial team, provide commercial advice and guidance to other team members as required.

Hybrid – Clearwater Court – You’ll be expected to split your time between our head office in central Reading, site and home working.

36 hours a week, Monday to Friday.

This role will require the successful candidate to have access to a car and driver’s licence.

We’re looking for you to

  • Being educated at a degree level and chartered in Quantity Surveying or equivalent is required for this role.
  • Be enthusiastic and can take ownership of tasks, think on their feet, devise plans of action, and deliver effective solutions.
  • Hold your ground and offer reasoned advice in a fast-paced environment.
  • Having in-depth knowledge of infrastructure and the water industry is preferable.
  • Have excellent commercial and contractual knowledge with an in-depth knowledge of construction contracts e.g., NEC.
  • Have excellent negotiation and dispute-resolution skills required.
  • Have an understanding of the costs and risks associated with the delivery of projects.
