Nuclear Restoration Services Limited (NRS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa, and research sites Harwell and Winfrith. NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog. As a division of NRS, NRS Dounreay is responsible for the clean-up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development.

About the role

Could you be our next Senior Safety Case Engineer? You’ll deliver nuclear safety cases and associated documentation supporting projects on a leading decommissioning site, as well as general site safety case requirements (e.g. Periodic Safety Review).
Every project at NRS has unique and interesting challenges requiring sound judgement, teamwork and project delivery excellence. Many of our projects are world first decommissioning challenges and attract interest from the wider decommissioning community.
We also welcome applications for those looking to develop and therefore may not meet all the essential criteria for the role. In these circumstances there may be a lower grade offered for a development opportunity. The successful candidate would be considered on a case by case basis and supported with a PDP (Personal Development Plan) to enable a clear path for progression into the role.
Key Deliverables
Subject Matter Expert for Nuclear Safety case:
The role-holder will need experience and a good understanding of production and assessment of nuclear safety cases. These would cover projects to retrieve and process the site’s waste inventories, decommissioning proposals to modify or demolish site facilities, and the day-to-day operation of the site.
Subject Matter Expert for AssetSuite maintenance schedule application:
Understand the site’s safety and compliance-related maintenance requirements, assess changes to the maintenance schedules used to control and time maintenance activities, and manage them through the AssetSuite application.
Assessments and advice on site modifications, and Modifications Panel Chair:
Provide assessments and advice for site modification proposals, requiring good understanding of the processes and standards used to produce and control modifications. Occasionally will chair the site’s Modifications Meeting or stand in for the site Design Authority.
Commissioning oversight (Test & Commissioning Panel Chair):
Provide oversight and guidance to projects being designed, built, or commissioned to retrieve and handle waste, and to decommission site assets. Participate in and lead Test & Commissioning Panels which control and approve commissioning processes and activities.
Maintenance and update of documentation for site operations and safety case:
Safety case section are responsible for maintaining and updating a range of site documents used for tracking the status and operation of plant assets. These need to be reviewed and updated on a regular timescale.
Qualifications and Experience
Degree in a suitable technical subject.
Knowledge of modern standards of safety case production and processes within the nuclear industry.
Experience of work control systems and practices.
Good IT skills including experience with Microsoft Office applications.
Strong communications skills and ability to lead meetings.
Knowledge of work control and operational processes on a decommissioning site.

Flexible working – where possible.
The equivalent of 25 days (185 hours per year) annual leave plus Public Holidays (59.2 hours per year). This increases by 2 days (14.8 hours per year) annual leave after two full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year) , and an additional 3 days (22.2 hours per year) annual leave after five full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year). You also have the option to buy or sell the equivalent of 5 days (37 hours) annual leave each year (available in specific windows for the following holiday year). For the purpose of assessing an employee’s annual leave entitlement, a day means seven and two fifths (7.4) hours. A pro rata entitlement will apply for part time workers.

Please be aware this role holder requires security clearance, or the ability to obtain said clearance.
There is a requirement to live within a commutable distance to the sites where the role is based. For central/multi-site roles, we have various hubs across the UK and can be flexible with base location.
