Thames Water is hiring a Principal Engineer to lead a technical team focused on London’s Wastewater pumps and pumping stations. The role involves developing, building, and leading a multi-disciplined team to ensure the success of projects and programs. The Principal Engineer will be responsible for delivering key project objectives, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and meet quality standards. The ideal candidate should have a degree or equivalent in engineering or construction, excellent leadership and communication skills, and a passion for continuous improvement. Job Description:The Principal Engineer will lead a technical team focusing on London’s Wastewater pumps and pumping stations. You will develop, build, and lead the multi-disciplined team necessary to ensure the success of your project(s) and programmes.

You will be responsible for developing and delivering all key project technical objectives against business case objectives. You will be key in ensuring projects deliver on time, cost, and quality and a robust health, safety, well-being, and delivery-focused culture.

What you’ll be doing as a Principal Engineer

  • Plan the design activities for an extensive portfolio of projects, from concept design through feasibility and de-risking activities to contract award. Manage and monitor these activities to meet or outperform the project milestones and allocated budgets.
  • Responsible for the Technical Assurance of detailed designs by contractors and design change reviews and waiver applications during construction.
  • Responsible for providing the Project Teams with the support they need during commissioning and handover of assets.
  • Act as the point of contact for Project Managers for technical-related matters.
  • Act as the key contact for the CDM Designer or Principal Designer role as required.
  • Undertake Health and Safety inspections of construction sites and work with the construction engineers to always reach higher and improve our H&S performance.
  • Be competent in risk management, including risk identification, mitigation, and control. De-risking and adding value are crucial requirements for this position.
  • Undertake design reviews, ensuring robust and safe solutions whilst meeting business and operational requirements.

Hybrid – Maple Lodge, you will be required on-site 2-3 days a week.

36 hours a week, Monday – Friday.

What you should bring to the role

  • Degree level or equivalent. If not professionally chartered, then the quality of experience and knowledge in engineering and construction is expected to be the same as that expected from a chartered engineer.
  • Understanding of the regulatory environment to achieve compliance as required.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to influence senior colleagues and collaborate with others to achieve buy-in from all those involved.
  • Passion for continuous improvement.
  • Drive professional development and diversity within Engineering in Thames.

  • Competitive salary from £55,000 to £75,000 per annum.
  • This role will have a car allowance of £5800 per annum.
  • 26 days holiday per year increasing to 30 with the length of service. (Plus bank holidays)
