The teacher will instruct students from primary 4 to S6, develop the Pipe Band programme, and participate in various events and competitions. The Edinburgh Academy is seeking to appoint an experienced and enthusiastic Snare Drum teacher from August 2025 to join our thriving Pipe Band team, engaged on a permanent, term-time salaried basis.
We welcome applications from individuals with relevant teaching qualifications and/or experience. The successful candidate should be able to teach Snare Drum from primary 4 to S6 as well as help develop the Pipe Band programme. Teaching will take place in both the Junior and the Senior schools.
The appointed teacher may be engaged at other times throughout the year where rehearsals, competitions or performances both in and out of school as required, such as the CCF events, RSPBA and Non-RSPBA competitions, as well as other events. They would be expected to play a full role within the pipe band team to organise events, trips and competitions.
Main Responsibilities:
The following is not an exhaustive list of the responsibilities of the Drumming Instructor and is intended to give a summary of the successful candidate’s working week
- Provide weekly individual Snare Drum lessons as directed by the Head of the Pipe Band
- Arrange and notate drum scores for traditional and contemporary performances
- Give regular, informative feedback to students on their progress, and complete an annual written report for parents
- Support SQA and other exam candidates as required
- Ensure all school instruments and equipment are well-maintained and in good order
- Contribute to school and external performances, ensuring pupils are well prepared and supporting them in person on the day / during the event
- Support with the organisation and preparation for school and external performances
- Maintain positive relationships with pupils, parents and colleagues
- Follow the guidelines and expectations of the Music Department
At least 60% of your time will be dedicated to teaching pupils, with the remainder of your time allocated to supporting Pipe Major in the organisation of examinations, events and competitions.
Due to the nature of this role, there may also be occasional evening, weekend and school holiday events that will require your support and attendance. These will be agreed with the Pipe Major. All annual leave must be taken during school holidays
Ideal Candidate:
- Is an outstanding performing practitioner
- Has proven success in teaching young people with appropriate qualifications or equivalent experience
- Has thorough knowledge of repertoire, including that required for RSPBA Competitions and PDQB exams
- A willingness to be flexible around working / attendance times
- Is a prompt and effective communicator, in person and by email
- Has excellent organisational skills
- Is a great team player
