A skilled and motivated Data Engineer is sought for a 6-month contract in Edinburgh. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing data extraction and cleansing pipelines, fine-tuning OCR processes, and developing rules for the automatic classification of legal casework. Essential skills and experience include significant commercial experience with Python, PostgreSQL, REST APIs, and modern DevOps and CI/CD practices and tooling, as well as expertise in SQL and data transformation. The role offers a pay rate of £450 per day and is outside IR35.

We are currently seeking a skilled and motivated Data Engineer to join our client’s team for a 6-month contract. As a Data Engineer, you will play a crucial role in implementing data extraction and cleansing pipelines, fine-tuning OCR processes, and developing rules for the automatic classification of legal casework from structured and unstructured sources.
Key Responsibilities:
- Implement data extraction and cleansing pipelines to prepare data for the automatic classification of legal casework.
- Fine-tune OCR processes for extracting text from legal documents and forms.
- Develop and implement rules for the automatic classification of legal casework.
- Ensure the technical resiliency of all data integration solutions and services.
- Support ongoing data engineering activities and enhance existing data product outputs.
- Collaborate with technical colleagues to design robust data integration solutions.
- Demonstrate excellent, sustainable, and collaborative software development practices.
- Troubleshoot and fix development and production problems across multiple environments and operating platforms.
- Engage with the wider communities of practice to share knowledge, techniques, and experiences.
- Ensure high quality of developed solutions through the maintenance of unit tests and code analysis.
- Comply with non-functional software requirements such as accessibility, security, UI/UX, performance, maintainability, and deployability.
- Use collaborative development practices such as pairing and mobbing techniques in programming, code reviews, system design, and requirements analysis.
- Support and deliver the disaster recovery assurance of digital services.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Significant commercial experience with Python, PostgreSQL, REST APIs, and modern DevOps and CI/CD practices and tooling.
- Expertise in SQL, data transformation, and analysis.
- Experience in delivering high-quality software collaboratively in high-performing, cross-functional development teams.
- Experience implementing data ETLs, data streaming systems, and data integration solutions.
- Familiarity with Agile delivery models, such as Scrum and/or Kanban frameworks.
