This is currently a vacancy for you to join a centre of Pathology excellence at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), one of the largest teaching hospitals in England. We have state of the art facilities across 4 sites (Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull hospitals). The successful candidate will be primarily based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital site but there will be a requirement to work across all sites.
We are looking to appoint a highly motivated and enthusiastic HCPC registered Senior Biomedical Scientist, with the IBMS Specialist portfolio and MSc qualifications to join our Point of Care Testing department. The candidate will need to be able to demonstrate a high level of technical knowledge and competence, good interpersonal skills, and evidence of involvement in laboratory technical projects or developments. Previous experience of working in POCT and involvement in preparation of ISO documentation desired.
Point of Care has expanded significantly and will continue to do so over the short term and long-term future. Department has more than 70 Blood Gas Analysers, 500 glucose/ketone meters, urinalysis, urinary HCG testing, HbA1c, Hb, D Dimer, INR, TEG, ROTEM systems, COVID and Flu testing.
The Point of Care department delivers a dynamic service that actively promotes innovation and service development. The post holder will be expected to work both alone and as part of a team, all working towards a common goal.
Main duties, tasks & skills required
The role includes management of a wide range of POCT analysers/ devices and the maintenance, training, competency, quality assurance and governance of these devices.
The successful candidate will be involved in the management of the POCT team whilst maintaining the current level of POCT/COVID Lab service and leading service development including verification of equipment, auditing, and reviewing of documents to help towards UKAS accreditation.
You will help to deliver technical excellence and drive forward change in this busy department. We are committed to personal and professional development, and this will be encouraged and supported. There will also be opportunities to be involved in the wider management of the department along with various projects.
Soon there will be a new POCT contract within the Trust and the post holder will be a vital person to work with the POCT team to verify, validate, install, implement, and coordinate with training lead in delivering training to the clinical users on the new systems. IT connectivity into electronic patient records will be a critical element and you will work with the POCT manager and Trust IT to implement this.
The post holder will be expected to travel to, and from these hospitals and institutions. There will be a requirement to work flexibly across the sites and participation in on call rota.

Qualifications
Essential
* State registration with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
* MSc, Equivalent academic achievement ratified by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) OR Equivalent Level 7 Post Graduate Certification or Diploma
* Qualification in Delivering Training.
* Evidence of continuing professional development and proficiency in accordance with HPC guidelines.
* Post registration specialty training in accordance with Institute of Biomedical Sciences IBMS guidelines.
Experience
Essential
* On-going completion of a portfolio demonstrating continuing competence in area of expertise and professional development.
* Discipline specific proficiency for HCPC registration
* Significant post registration experience in a specific laboratory discipline
* Demonstrable experience in delivering training.
A specialised knowledge of:
* Good laboratory practice, good manufacturing practice and quality assurance practices.
* Laboratory accreditation, relevant ISO and European standards
* Fault finding and trouble shooting.
* Laboratory health and safety.
* HCPC and IBMS professional standards, ethics and proficiencies.
Biomedical Science theory and practice (Haematology, Biochemistry, Microbiology,Cellular Pathology and Molecular Pathology).
