We present an exciting opportunity for an engineering graduate or equivalent to participate in paid training to attain registration as a Clinical Technologist (Radiation Engineering) and a career in linac engineering. The successful candidate will be enrolled on the IPEM Clinical Technologist Training Scheme and participate in hands-on training and engineering activity during the programme which usually takes two years. Initially you will be paid at Band 6 Annex 21 70%-75% rates (29,832 – 31,963). Upon completion, registration, and an internal assessment your permanent contract will be at Band 6 level (35,392 – 42,618).
Your work will directly contribute to the quality and timeliness of our radiotherapy treatments for cancer patients at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
Please note that the Job Description is for the substantive post, which you will be expected to meet at the end of your Training period. At appointment, you will be expected to have a BEng Hons in Electronic or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, and a demonstrable interest in using your skills to provide healthcare services.
Main duties, tasks & skills required
The main duties of the job are to maintain, modify, calibrate and quality assure highly complex clinical equipment, particularly linear accelerators (linacs). You will need to communicate effectively and professionally with other members of staff and external stakeholders to ensure an effective plan for returning equipment to full use. You will be expected to supervise and oversee other trainees and apprentices. Please see attached Job Description for full details of responsibilities.

Qualifications
Essential
BEng Hons in Electronic/ Mechanical Engineering or equivalent as well as additional knowledge and experience in radiation engineering equivalent to Post Graduate Diploma level.
Registered Clinical Technologist, or eligible for equivalence process.
Experience
Essential
Specialist knowledge of radiotherapy equipment and facilities including HT generation, RF systems, high vacuum systems and safety-critical real-time computer control.
Extensive specialist knowledge of analogue, digital and power electronic components, devices, systems and design, electro-mechanical systems and equipment support and repair.
Evidence of Continued Professional Development in Medical Physics especially in the field of electronics engineering applied to radiotherapy technologies.
Good working knowledge and practical experience of a range of specialist treatment machine Quality Control procedures including radiation dosimetry and adjustment of radiation beam parameters.
Knowledge of the hazards, including ionising radiation, encountered in medical equipment maintenance and production activities and the necessary precautions required.
Understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure or human error and of the critical requirement for accuracy in Quality Control of radiotherapy equipment.
Knowledge of the NHS working environment within a quality management system (e.g. ISO9001:2015).
Comprehension of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines, procedures and practices, e.g. ISO 9001:2015, relevant BSI and ISO standards, Health and Safety at Work Act, RIDDOR, COSHH, IRR, IR(ME)R, Data Protection Act and Caldicott.
Desirable
Extensive practical experience and specialist expertise gained through training (including manufacturers’ courses) on linear accelerators, simulators and other radiotherapy equipment, associated radiotherapy systems (e.g. Treatment Management System) and associated Medical Physics equipment (e.g. dosimetry equipment)
Practical experience in electronics technology procedures, techniques, design (including CAD) and the use of sophisticated diagnostic equipment.
Experience of using practical and mechanical skills to implement the repair and replacement of parts on complex mechanical systems.

Good analytical and judgement skills with ability to solve clinical technical problems based upon consideration of a range of possible solutions, adapting protocols where necessary.
Able to liaise effectively and provide and receive complex information (e.g. when dealing with equipment failure or discussing device needs and design specifications with other professional groups).
Able to respond and communicate appropriately with possibly distressed patients or their relatives when working in the Radiotherapy Department.
Able to manage own workload under competing service demands.
Able to plan and organise design projects and ongoing treatment machine maintenance solutions.
Able to exercise own initiative and, guided by defined occupational policies and procedures, deal autonomously with treatment machine problems and abnormal and unpredictable technical issues within own specialist area of competence.
Proficient with treatment machine operating systems (operating modalities, machine calibration and diagnostic tools etc.).
Skilled user of standard computer applications (Excel, Word, Access, search engines etc.) to maintain Technical Services records, to set up documents and to obtain detailed information.

Able to work flexibly is a requirement, including early and late working with some weekends
Participation in the emergency weekend on-call rota.
Able to work and travel across all UHB sites and externally as required by the role.
