Anne Edwards had taken a break from her job as an employment lawyer in a firm of solicitors. She wanted to know what her options were, and how to navigate today’s job market most effectively. Anne is now on contract as an Employee Relations Advisor at a leading financial institution. She says her CareerBalance Coach helped her look at her career in a totally different light and she has already recommended CareerBalance.
What major issue did you want to tackle?
Solicitors in private practice typically follow a linear career path. If you want to break out, it’s hard to know what your options are. I needed tips on how to think more creatively about ways to use my legal skills.
How did CareerBalance help you move forward?
My Career Coach helped me enormously before and after our structured sessions and he continues to do so. The initial questionnaires helped me discover which aspects of work I like best – for example, advising and training people, being creative and analysis.
Where did CareerBalance make the most impact for you?
My career coach genuinely understood my motivations – he wasn’t just selling me his services. He’s seen many people like me before, and he took the time to understand me individually, challenging my answers to ensure I didn’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. While I ultimately left private legal practice, I didn’t leave the law completely. CareerBalance has a thorough knowledge of the job market. They constantly source vacancies from the internet, social media, subscription publications and print media. Even in our first meeting, my career coach
showed me a description of a job that had been filled, but it appealed to me immediately. He also suggested I list 10 companies I’d like to work for and discussed ways I could create opportunities for myself that way. I understood this approach was prevalent in the more creative industries, but I hadn’t appreciated this was applicable across the board. My career coach was invaluable in showing me how my experience could be an asset in different sectors. By looking at my legal skills and employment law experience differently, I soon secured three in-house job offers.
How might things have turned out differently without the help of CareerBalance?
Making a career change can be daunting and frightening. But my career coach was calm, constructive, knowledgeable and supportive. CareerBalance helped me drill down to discover what I really wanted to do, and gave me the time, space, tools and confidence to find a successful alternative career. Without all the sessions and CareerBalance’s advice and creative spirit, I’d probably have ended up replacing my career with the same again – without identifying a clear strategy, only to remain unfulfilled. I might not have found the belief that I could achieve what I have done.
How is your new job going?
It’s going well. It’s just under two years since I used CareerBalance and I’m still in touch with my CareerBalance coach. I use my legal knowledge every day and as I look to the future, I continue to use the tools and approaches I’ve learned at CareerBalance.
Would you recommend CareerBalance or go back in the future?
I’ve already recommended CareerBalance. Everyone can benefit from a career MOT every couple of years – we spend a lot of time at work.
