This is an exciting opportunity for you to join a centre of Pathology excellence at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), one of the largest teaching hospitals in England. We have state of the art facilities across 4 sites.
We are looking for an experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to be appointed as a Training Lead within the Biochemistry Department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. In this role you will be expected to lead the department with regards to all training related matters including the implementation, delivery, development and maintenance of the training and competency of staff within the department.
Due to the nature of this role, it is essential that you have an understanding of specialist healthcare science activities acquired through additional training or knowledge to post graduate level or equivalent e.g., Post registration specialist competency portfolio. This role is primarily based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital but you may be required to work across all sites that are part of UHB.

Main duties, tasks & skills required
Maintain compliance with good laboratory practice, quality assurance procedures in accordance with UKAS ISO 15189 standards.
Ensure full compliance with all statutory responsibilities for staff, training, education, competencies and continuing professional development.
Work to develop a comprehensive and workable training and competency programme for all staff in collaboration with managers, specialist, senior and advanced BMS as appropriate, including developing tutorials and educational lectures.
Support the departmental Training by liaising as appropriate, with external bodies including professional body, IBMS and Higher Education Institutions.
Monitor training issues and non-conformances arising from audits.
Produce a departmental progress report for training meetings.
Oversee the work of medical laboratory assistants, trainee biomedical scientists and post registration biomedical scientists, including the support of personnel undertaking professional or academic development programmes
Undertake staff appraisals following Trust policies and procedures.
Ensure that all staff receives an appropriate induction.
To safely handle, use and dispose of biological samples.
You Will play a vital role in the maintenance of training status for professional training with the
IBMS
It is envisaged that this role will constitute 80 per cent of the post holder’s time. 20 per cent of
the time will be based in the laboratory enabling the individual to maintain their training and

Essential
State registration with Health and Care
Professions Council (HCPC)
MSc, Equivalent academic achievement
ratified by the Institute of Biomedical
Science (IBMS) OR Equivalent Level 7
Post Graduate Certification or Diploma
Qualification in Delivering Training.
Evidence of continuing professional
development and proficiency in
accordance with HPC guidelines.
Post registration specialty training in
accordance with Institute of Biomedical
Sciences IBMS guidelines.
Desirable
Attended formal management course
Good awareness of current issues within
Pathology locally and nationally.
Experience
Essential
On-going completion of a portfolio
demonstrating continuing competence in

Discipline specific proficiency for HCPC
registration
Significant post registration experience in
a specific laboratory discipline
Demonstrable experience in delivering
training.
A specialised knowledge of:
Good laboratory practise, good

and European standards
Fault finding and trouble shooting.
Laboratory health and safety.
