The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) is the professional membership body for over 55,000 GPs across the UK and internationally, making us the largest of the medical royal colleges. It is also a charity driven by the mission to encourage, foster and maintain the highest possible standards in general medical practice. As a modern, forward-thinking organisation, we champion excellence in primary care and promote the highest standards of healthcare for patients and communities. With general practice at the heart of the NHS, and amid ongoing reform across health systems, the College has a vital opportunity to strengthen its voice, shape policy, and support GPs through change with relevance and authority. Based at 30 Euston Square, London, with faculties and devolved councils across the UK, the RCGP operates with national influence and local reach, guided by a dedicated team of more than 275 professionals.

This is an outstanding opportunity to join the College’s Executive Management Team in a pivotal leadership role. Working closely with the Chair and Chief Executive, the Executive Director of Policy and Communications will shape the College’s strategy, voice, and influence – leading a talented team of 70 across policy, research, campaigns, public affairs, communications, and international engagement. The postholder will ensure that the RCGP remains a powerful, trusted advocate for general practice, capable of shaping national debate and influencing government, media, and the wider health system.

We are seeking a dynamic and strategic leader with senior-level experience in policy, public affairs, communications, or a related influencing environment. You will bring a proven track record in shaping policy and leading reputation management across complex, multi-stakeholder settings, ideally within health, care, or membership-based sectors. Exceptional communication, political judgment, and relationship-building skills are essential, alongside the ability to lead with authenticity, inclusivity, and impact. This role requires a collegiate, values-driven leader who is passionate about strengthening general practice and improving patient outcomes. You will demonstrate strategic acumen, creativity, and resilience, fostering collaboration across diverse teams and empowering others to deliver high-quality, high-impact work. A commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, and a belief in the value of general practice as the foundation of the NHS, will be central to your approach.

Saxton Bampfylde Ltd is acting as an employment agency advisor to the RCGP on this appointment. For further information about the role, including details about how to apply, please visit using reference ZBURB. Alternatively email . Applications should be received by noon on 24th November 2025.
