60Job Description:This is unique opportunity to contribute to delivering and developing an innovative pilot service for 0–25-year-olds at risk of or affected by youth violence. This role is part of the NHS England North Central London Vanguard, to develop a model of care for children and young people who may be affected by serious youth violence. The service adopts a holistic and multi-agency integrated approach based on the understanding that no individual service has the solution for the complex issues facing some young people. The service draws largely on community psychology, narrative, AMBIT, attachment-based and trauma informed principles.
The team is made up of Clinical Psychologists, Specialist case and youth workers, young people and community leaders employed as community consultants. As a partnership service we draw on a strong collective of shared values and the team deliver accessible evidence-based and holistic mental health interventions in environments where young people feel in control and safe, including a community hub, youth clubs, other community spaces and young people’s homes. Recognising the contextual factors that affect wellbeing, interventions are targeted across different areas of a young person’s life (e.g., emotional, social, relational, occupational, etc.). The service has been coproduced alongside young people and the community underpinned by the ethos that they are experts in their own lives and are best placed to know what would support their community.
The post holder will hold a central role in providing direct and adapted evidence based psychological interventions in community-based settings to young people. The role involves working closely with the team, families and multi-agency professionals to improve emotional and holistic well-being support for children and young people who may have difficulty accessing it. Alongside more individual clinical work, the service works across multiple levels, seeking to shift how the wider system perceives and works with young people, hoping to address inequalities to create sustainable change. The postholder will have opportunities to offer consultation to non-psychologist colleagues, professionals and carers within young people’s networks. The postholder will contribute to providing clinical leadership across the service, working closely with all team members in ensuring the delivery of highly innovative and adaptive evidence-based care. There will be opportunities to work alongside young people with lived experience to coproduce creative activities and social action projects. Embracing new ways of working will be key, as the model constantly evolves to respond to the needs and aspirations of young people it serves. The postholder will be required to utilise research skills for audit, policy, service development and research in order to evaluate the service and provide evidence for further service development.
The partnership between Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust (BEH) and Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust (C&I) is going from strength to strength since it was originally established in 2021 forming the North London Mental Health Partnership.
In order to meet the needs of the new Partnership services you may be required from time to time to work at different locations to your normal place of work. This may mean that you are required to work at any location that fall under Barnet, Enfield and Harringay Trust and Camden and Islington Trust. The Trust reserves the right to require staff to work at such other places or locations as it considers reasonable and necessary on a temporary or permanent basis.
Clinical:
To offer specialist, highly flexible and innovative assessment to young people and occasionally their families and/or refer a young person to other services as appropriate. This may include risk assessment, and subsequent risk management, with the provision of specialist advice for other professionals
To formulate and implement highly specialised and innovative plans for the psychological treatment and/or management of a young person’s mental health needs; be responsible for implementing a range of psychological interventions for individuals and groups and to evaluate and make decisions about the intervention options available. This will involve interpretation and integration of complex psychological data and competing or contradictory theories/hypotheses from professionals from other agencies
To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation and intervention approaches of young people and to monitor progress
To develop, facilitate and deliver well-being group based activities and interventions that are grounded in psychological theory and principles or to support the delivery of groups alongside other team members or professionals.
To act as a lead professional, where appropriate, taking responsibility for initiating planning and review of care plans. This will involve offering staff from other agencies guidance on mental health
To act in a consultative capacity for staff across the partnership and other agencies concerning the psychological issues relating to the young people known to the service
To contribute in an active way to the network of services for young offenders and to ensure the co-ordination of services provided. This will involve working closely with colleagues from other agencies
To manage and supervise clinical posts as appropriate, including professionals from a non-mental health backgrounds and caseworkers with lived experience
To engage in clinical audit and maintain appropriate records of work
Consider ways in which child and young adult mental health provision may develop within the service.
Consultation, Teaching, Training, and Supervision
To provide consultation and training to other professionals within the team developing understanding of psychological interventions; which will assist with day to day clinical practice
To provide consultation and training to external services as required.
To receive regular clinical professional supervision from a senior clinical psychologist and, where appropriate, other senior professional colleagues.
To develop skills in the area of professional post-graduate teaching, training and supervision and to provide supervision to other MDT staff’s psychological work as appropriate.
To provide professional and clinical supervision of other team members.
To contribute to the pre- and post-qualification teaching of clinical psychology, as appropriate.
To provide advice, consultation and training to staff working with the client group across a range of agencies and settings, where appropriate.
Communication
· To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of clients under their care and to monitor progress during the course of both uni- and multi-disciplinary care.
· Communicate both verbally and in written format regarding complex and sensitive information.
· Communication with the MDT regarding care and treatment planning
· Communication regarding supervision and consultation with other staff.
· Communication with colleagues from health and other services regarding the provision of psychological assessment and intervention for service users.
Patient/Customer Care
· Much of the day to day role will involve direct contact with young people and consultation to staff both within and external to the service. Providing direct clinical input as described above and communicating with the wider team regarding the treatment provided.
People (HR) Management
· Supervision of trainee and student psychologists when on placement, assistant psychologists and specialist youth workers/caseworkers if required.
Information Management
· Responsible for keeping good quality clinical records that comply with data protection legislation and Trust policies and protocols.
· Produce reports following assessment and interventions.
Service Development
· To work closely with the team and young people to develop the service to ensure that it meets the needs of the community and coproducing alongside young people.
· To contribute to the wider service development and innovation to improve access to young people and the community as required.
· To contribute to service evaluation, collecting feedback and peer review as required.
Sys t e m s an d E q ui p m en t
· To use and maintain psychological test equipment relevant to the role.
Effort, Mental and Environment
· The role requires significant mental effort in terms of assimilating and analyzing complex data in relation to known and evidence based psychological theory.
· Effort to manage the emotional aspects of the role and distress displayed by clients.
