The British Institute of Innkeeping (BII) is a charity that supports UK pub licensees through various member benefits, competitions, and events. They are currently seeking a PR and Comms Executive to assist the Head of Communications in managing media relations, government engagement, and event promotion. The role involves writing press releases, developing campaign ideas, and managing communications across various platforms. The ideal candidate should have a strong PR background, knowledge of the hospitality industry, excellent organisational skills, and the ability to work collaboratively. The position is based in Fleet, offering a hybrid work model with a salary range of £30,000 to £33,000.

The British Institute of Innkeeping (BII) is a charity and membership organisation, supporting licensees running pubs across the UK. We offer a wide range of member benefits, run industry leading competitions and host incredible events to champion our members and the wider pub sector.

We are a small, but fun team, delivering brilliant support to our members and promoting the sector, as well as taking our members’ voices to Government to challenge the incredible pressures our industry is currently facing.

We are hiring a PR and Comms Executive to support our Head of Communications and Comms team as they manage multiple media streams, events and communications.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES – A brief overview of what you will be doing

Supporting and working closely with the Head of Communications, the PR and Comms Executive will help deliver excellence in all areas of the Communication Team’s remit. In addition, they will work closely with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).

PR/Government engagement

Supporting the Head of Comms and CEO with the PR and communication of the BII’s engagement with Government and other stakeholders in our sector:

  • Writing press releases and email updates to members on our work with Government, as well as any key issues relating to the sector, with the support and guidance of Head of Comms and CEO.
  • Dealing with media professionals both in our sector and at national press level.
  • Developing relationships and working with key Comms professionals in other trade bodies, companies and businesses in our sector.
  • Developing ideas for campaigns to drive engagement, and champion the sector and the opportunities it presents.
  • Working with the Membership team to ensure Comms are delivering the actionable tools and information that members need to help their business.
  • Running member surveys to gain data on their challenges and identify key members we could work closely with to deepen our understanding of the pressures they are facing.

Events/Awards

Working with the Head of Comms and wider SLT to deliver successful events for the BII:

  • Assist the Head of Comms and Comms team to ensure we have excellent delivery of our competitions – Licensee of the Year Award, NITAs and any other competitions/awards as required.
  • Assist Head of Comms and SLT gaining Sponsorship for events.
  • Assist with the promotion of events within our sector via email and social campaigns, as well as through direct relationships with businesses in our sector.

Comms & Marketing – Website/Social Media/Email/Magazine/General Comms

Working with, and as part of, the brilliant BII Comms team, supporting activities across the board:

  • CRM and website management – managing content, layout and technical aspects of the BII website, including supporting a new website project and the creation and delivery of the Workforce website.
  • Production of marketing material such as imagery, guides, slides, social media posts, presentations etc. for all BII & Workforce needs.
  • Creation of email campaigns, including weekly newsletter, INNfocus and CEO updates
  • Contribute ideas and themes to the BII News magazine and assist with providing content and member contacts to BII News Editor, Kate Oppenheim.

PERSON SPECIFICATION – our ideal candidate

  • Strong experience in a PR related role, with confidence to tackle sensitive and nuanced subjects and approaches.
  • Self-motivated; ability to work under minimal supervision and lead on projects to ensure their successful delivery.
  • Flexible approach to support other team members in Communications, but also across all other departments and department Heads. We all work across multiple areas and pitch in to help each other across the board.
  • A strong understanding of the Hospitality industry, but in particular, pubs, would be incredibly beneficial.
  • Strong Marketing and/or Communications background including campaign strategy.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the role a membership body plays would also be very desirable.
  • Collaborative team player, with a can-do attitude and positive approach – our industry is fun to work in, but also incredibly demanding at times.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to deal with stakeholders at all levels, from BII members, through to leaders in other businesses.
  • Confident in managing multiple work streams in parallel and delivering on tight deadlines, particularly for Events and time sensitive media related activities.
  • High level of organisational skills.
  • Attention to detail – ability to spot issues and get them resolved efficiently.
  • Flexibility – able to switch from one task to another at short notice to deliver on important communications requirements.
  • Resilience – able to cope with a busy role and work well under pressure
  • Good level of IT skills with strong system knowledge of:

CRM systems, Website Management, Email campaign platforms, Canva graphics platform, All social media platforms.

Role based at our offices in Fleet 3 days a week and 2 days remotely, if workload and collaboration allows.

Salary range: £30-£33k depending on experience.
